When shopping for a coffee table, it’s natural to do exactly that: choose one coffee table. But why limit yourself to just one large one when you can use several small tables for the same effect? This doesn’t mean you should throw a few random tables around the room. Instead, follow a few simple guidelines to achieve an attractive, cohesive look.
If you don’t want the coffee table to be the focus of the room, choose one with a glass top and a finish that blends with others in the room, as in this example. This will keep the eye interested in all the items in the room, not just one layer of the design. Metal bases with glass tops are another good choice to keep rooms feeling open. They’re also great when you have a special rug and don’t want to block views of it. Keep your glass cleaner handy, though, as there is no way around fingerprints.
The Center of Attention. This approach can be independent of the others or can build off of any of the five previous with the addition of one element that is larger and/or more colorful than the other items. This item then becomes center of attention! You can easily use any of the other five approaches for every day use and then add that something extra for holidays, special occasions, or even just because!
Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re picking a coffee table. Before you choose a coffee table, first think about what you need it to do for you, or what your room is missing, then pick a table that provides the solution. To see what size of coffee table will work best for your room, first mark its footprint with painter’s tape. That will allow you to see the scale of the piece in the room and how that affects the surrounding furniture.
