Coffee tables should be the same height as the surrounding seating, with 18 inches being a good average (although it will depend on your furniture). If you select a coffee table with a lip, make sure the lip isn’t higher than the adjacent seating, or you’ll end up hitting your drink against the lip when you try to set it down. The idea is to put your drink down, not up.
If your living room has global style or elements of boho chic, try using a flat topped vintage trunk as your coffee table. For a more traditional space, try an antique chest. Either of these options would make great coffee tables and provide considerable storage. Keep an eye out for unique pieces, and you may just find the perfect non-traditional coffee table hiding right under your nose.
The Center of Attention. This approach can be independent of the others or can build off of any of the five previous with the addition of one element that is larger and/or more colorful than the other items. This item then becomes center of attention! You can easily use any of the other five approaches for every day use and then add that something extra for holidays, special occasions, or even just because!
The Spice of Life. As with any vignette, variety helps to create interest, and styling the coffee table is no exception! A grouping of items with varying heights, textures, and shapes creates a beautiful display. Try using something tall (like a vase of flowers), something short (a small sculpture or stack of books), something hard (like glass or ceramic), and something soft (plants, flowers, or another organic material). When grouped together, the items take on a somewhat organic and undefined shape.
